Five Ways You Can Help the Haiti Earthquake Victims

by admin on January 15, 2010

I’m sure you’ve heard that the worst Haitian earthquake in 200 years  (massive 7.0) struck the capital, Port Au-Prince a few days ago. The most affected area is Haiti’s West Province with a population of 2.2 million.

Haitian born singer Wyclef Jean of Yéle Haiti foundation has sent out an urgent plea asking others to help his damaged homeland.  In his statement he said “Haiti today faced a natural disaster of unprecedented proportion, an earthquake unlike anything the country has ever experienced.

I cannot stress enough what a human disaster this is, and idle hands will only make this tragedy worse. The over 2 million people in Port-au-Prince tonight face catastrophe alone. We must act now”

Let’s all bind together once again to support those in need and keep all those affected in our prayers. Together we can make a difference.

It’s easier for you to help than you think thanks to the humanitarian organizations that are out on the fields.

Here are a 5 ways that you can, choose what suits you best.

  • You can make an instant donation via text to Wyclef Jean’s Yéle Haiti foundation by texting “Yele” to 501501 and a donation of $5 will be given automatically to the foundation to help with relief efforts, or donate on Yele’s website. 100-percent of the cash goes to relief and the amount automatically gets added to your monthly phone bill.   Alternatively because of a joint venture between the American Red Cross and the US Department of State you can send  a donation of $10 instantly to the American Red Cross, just text the word “Haiti” (without the quotes) to 90999   You can make a donation by calling 1-800-REDCROSS or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish) You can read the article at the Red Cross Site Here Or to make a donation at British Red Cross emergency site here.

  • You can “make purchase for good” at the globalmarketplace with the one5 foundation which is providing greatly needed medical assistance and much more. Hub’s president and Chief Humanitarian Officer Spryte Loriano together with the Global Marketplace Manager Marcia King, are working together with the one5 foundation who is also a member of  HUB  to provide quick solutions through the HUB community. Go to the Globalmarketplace and click on “make purchase for good”  with the one5 foundation.
  • You can donate online at UNICEF who has released a total of $3.4 million toward the relief efforts from several emergency sources. They are rushing life-saving supplies into the hardest-hit communities in Haiti. Their response can been coordinated with other UN agencies and the International Red Cross and Red Crescent which is aimed at the children and women, who are the most vulnerable in times of crisis.
  • If a donation isn’t for you right now then another way you can help is to share this information through sites like facebook, twitter or any other social sites and via email to all you know and send a prayer to all those affected.
